  Polynesian Origins of Polynesian
Pop Culture Primer

The Polynesian Triangle spans an emence area of the pacific with corners in New Zealand, Easter Island and Hawaii. They were settled by the Polynesians who migrated from 10,000 B.C. These islanders were excellent wood carvers and used their craft to make both the sea voyaging canoes that allowed their amazing expansion and their gods. They sailed the worlds largest geographical feature and reached their homeland at a time when Europe had entered it's medieval period. This was a time that European sailors rarely left the sight of land, yet these civilizations had the advantage of millennia before the pacific islands were settled by the polynesians. Their culture might be savage, but they had arrived to their untouched homelands after the Pyramids, Jesus, and the Roman Empire. They were the spear head of the human race into it's last settled lands. A natural force perhaps? Regardless, the polynesians and their gods inspired something inside generations like an ancestors ghost.
  Now Really, why the Buddha?
Tiki culture has borrowed from exotic cultures across the globe. For example Tiki lounge cuisine has been borrowed form Asia, although made more tropical with pineapple garnish. During the golden age of tiki original tiki carvings were hard to be found (and still are), so tiki culture grabbed what was available. A fantastic image of a wild, savage land was formed that people could disappear in. Some believed this savagery to be noble, and hence I find the Buddha fit. To some buddha's philosophy fits in a noble, simple life. To others, Buddha fits in tiki culture because, like tiki statues, buddha carvings show a lot character. A charismatic, follower inspiring image (or idol) that invokes a feeling through knowledge and enlightenment or awe inspiring fear from scowls. Many would say buddha has nothing to do with tiki as well, but they would probably agree buddha statues are sweet or they are poop heads.
