Tiki Lounge EscapesA Tiki lounge is a place of escape from modern society, where people can enjoy an exotic tropical drink from a tiki mug or sit back and enjoy a few puffs. They are characterized by Polynesian decor featuring scowling tiki carvings, tiki masks and tiki mugs. Possible décor includes tiki lighting, rattan furniture, flower leis, bamboo paneling, and tapa cloth. A Tiki bar can usually be found in a Tiki lounge, although this isn't necessary. Tiki bars kits are available that don't require carpenters to assemble. Modern sensibilities and tight living quarters have created tiki shelves that give the exotic tiki feel to an otherwise normal, unsavage room. These along with other items are then used as a base for spreading tiki atmosphere, along with possible reinforcements, when a forbidden, savage mood is desired. A grander tiki lounge can have waterfalls and large tiki statues. Tiki music or jungle music is an excellent addition for a savage atmosphere. Fog can be filtered through tiki lounges of any size. Dry ice is used to create a steamy jungle fog and I have heard of it even being added to tropical drinks for a bubbling, misty effect. (Caution: this could be dangerous for the tipsy tiki partier.) Tiki lounges have blended various Polynesian traditions and come up with a new, fantastic version. Authenticity of the Polynesian flavor at tiki lounges varies, but true ancient tiki carvings are rare and generally only found only in museums. However the traditional ways to make them have survived and many artists still respect the ancient traditions of tiki carving. In the end, tiki lounges are about enjoying oneself under the gaze of the ancient, scowling gods and escaping back to mans tribal times. |
